During active addiction, there wasn’t a lot to celebrate. Recovery can also have its ups and downs. Nobody recovers from addiction miraculously overnight, and life without the use of drugs or alcohol will take some getting used to. Your body is still getting adjusting to staying clean, too.
When you’re new to recovery, you’re learning to cope with a lot of new things. You’re also looking around at life with a new set of eyes and ideas. Every day there is progress, one day at a time, even if you can’t see it yourself.
Here are some things to celebrate in your recovery, right now. They may not ALL apply to you, but choose the ones that fit, and feel good about them. (Add the ones you haven’t quite mastered yet to your “to do” list. )
- You have accepted that you have an addiction. In recovery, you’ll continue to have to remind yourself of this. But you have quit using and asked for help., which is the hardest part of the step.
- You have a 12-step sponsor. Choosing a sponsor may be a daunting task at first, but having one you trust is a vital tool for recovery.
- You have learned how to ask for help. This skill may take practice, but you know how to do it. If you’re in crisis, reach out to somebody in your support system.
- You have plugged into self-help recovery groups. You have learned this how you build a support system. Take time to find the 12-step meetings you like the best.
- You know you are not alone. Addiction was lonely for most people. But now you understand that many people struggle with addiction. Many of the feelings they have and the symptoms of their addiction are similar to yours.
- You know that people DO recover. There are millions of people across the world that have gotten and stayed clean from drug or alcohol addiction. You can find them in 12-step meetings in most cities and even small towns.
- You want to change your life, and you’re actively working towards it. This is a BIG deal. Bettering yourself every day is something to feel proud about, and it takes strength and courage to continue to do it on a daily basis.
- You have educated yourself about your substance use disorder. Understanding disease and its symptoms is an excellent way to keep it under control.
- You’re clean today! Plus any days you’ve already been clean. And that’s always great news!
These are just a few victories that anyone new to recovery can celebrate, even if they need a refresher from time to time. Recovery is a lot of significant changes, but they often involve small steps. So take those steps every day!
